Basil Clemons papers, 1909-1920.

The Basil Clemons Papers consist of a mixture of photographs and postcards, 130 items in all. Clemons was the photographer for at least 95 of the images, which depict primarily mining, streetscapes, and festive gatherings in and near Ruby, Long, Iditarod, and Flat, Alaska. Also included are scenes of Fort Liscum, Valdez, and Anchorage, Alaska, and images of groups and events in Seattle, Washington. On the reverse of 47 of the postcards and photographs are personal notes addressed by Clemons to family members with whom he corresponded in 1909-1918. Most are brief notes reporting his wellbeing, but some contain information on his travels and experiences. The collection includes one folder of biographical information gathered from published sources.

Basil Edwin Clemons (1887-1964) was born in Lauderdale County, Alabama, and raised in Alabama and Texas. In 1903 he moved to California, eventually becoming a photographer in Hollywood. In 1909 he traveled to Alaska, where he spent nearly a decade photographing gold mining camps, Alaska Natives, and dogsled races, particularly in the Ruby and Iditarod regions.
